Tara Desel, PLADC
Hello,
My name is Tara Desel, PLADC and I specialize in working with adolescents who are navigating the challenges of substance use and addiction.
With 11 years of experience in adolescent behavioral health and addiction recovery, I understand that this stage of life can be especially complex—for both teens and their families.
My goal is to create a safe, structured, and supportive environment where young people can heal, build resilience, and regain a sense of control over their lives.
My approach is grounded in evidence-based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing. I also integrate trauma-informed care and strengths-based methods to meet each adolescent where they are and help them reconnect with their values, goals, and sense of self.
Through counseling and substance use treatment services, adolescents are given the tools to better understand their behaviors, manage triggers, repair relationships, and make healthier choices while remaining connected to their families, schools, and communities. I also work closely with caregivers to support the family system, provide education, and promote long-term recovery at home.
Recovery is not a straight line, but with the right guidance and support, change is absolutely possible. I’m here to walk that path with you—one step at a time.
Best,
Tara Desel, PLADC

My Approach to Treatment
I believe effective treatment starts with understanding each adolescent’s unique experiences, strengths, and challenges. Rather than focusing solely on substance use, I work collaboratively with clients to understand the factors contributing to their struggles and identify healthier ways of coping.
My approach combines evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and strengths-based interventions. I strive to create a supportive environment where adolescents feel respected, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes.
Family involvement is often an important part of the recovery process. When appropriate, I work closely with caregivers to strengthen communication, improve support systems, and promote positive outcomes both at home and in the community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you only work with adolescents?
My primary focus is working with adolescents and young people struggling with substance use concerns, behavioral challenges, and related mental health issues.
What is a substance use evaluation?
A substance use evaluation is a professional assessment that examines substance use history, risk factors, mental health concerns, and treatment needs. The evaluation helps determine appropriate recommendations and next steps.
Do you work with court-referred or probation-referred youth?
Yes. I provide services for youth involved with probation, diversion programs, juvenile justice systems, and other court-related referrals.
Do parents participate in treatment?
When appropriate, parent and caregiver involvement is encouraged. Family support can play an important role in successful recovery and long-term positive outcomes.
What treatment approaches do you use?
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, strengths-based approaches, relapse prevention strategies, and other evidence-based interventions.
Do you provide telehealth appointments?
Telehealth appointments may be available depending on the client’s needs, clinical appropriateness, and scheduling availability.
Can counseling help if my teen is resistant to treatment?
Many adolescents are initially hesitant about counseling. Building trust, creating a supportive environment, and helping youth identify their own goals are important parts of the therapeutic process.
